The Storm

Adventure style thriller have always been part of my life. I’ve read a few of Clive Cussler’s ones so far. I like the way he intertwines events of the past with those of the present. Often they’re ridiculously far fetched, yet somehow I love the world he has created. Like the Atlantis type novels, the Dan Brown style mysteries, there’s something comforting about the alternative history stories.

This is typical Clive Cussler, full of adventure centred upon the NUMA organisation. This particular novel is from the NUMA files series featured the main protagonists Kurt Austin and his sidekick Joe Zavala. The other NUMA characters are all there as well, although in the background. This book has it all, large floating islands, plots to change the worlds climate and a damsel in distress.

Sometimes I think these books are still rooted in a style of writing that is of the past, and not in a good way. There’s always the brave male rescuing the female. They are getting better, not so much with the hero always getting the women like in the earlier ones. However it feels cringe worthy at times. Obviously the formula is just too strong to deviate from.

This book is a decent read, yet it lacks something somewhere. I can’t put my finger on it but maybe the tech in this one is a bit far-fetched. I get the feeling the ideas may have run out. The residents of Pritchards Island are too much stereotypical and make me feel uneasy.

So this isn’t one of the better ones, it’s an OK read but too set in the past where male protagonists were acceptable. Not sure if I’ll read anymore in the series.
